<p>Selene (als Personifikation des <a href="Monat" title="Monat">Monats</a> und poetisch manchmal auch <span lang="grc-Grek" class="Grek">Μήνη</span> <span class="Latn" lang="grc-Latn" style="font-weight:normal;font-style:italic">Mḗnē</span>; bei den <a href="R%C3%B6misches_Reich" title="Römisches Reich">Römern</a> <a href="Luna" title="Luna">Luna</a>), die <a href="G%C3%B6ttin" title="Göttin">Göttin</a> des Mondes, ist die Tochter des <a href="Hyperion_(Mythologie)" class="mw-redirect" title="Hyperion (Mythologie)">Hyperion</a> und der <a href="Theia" title="Theia">Theia</a> und die Schwester des <a href="Helios" title="Helios">Helios</a> und der <a href="Eos_(Mythologie)" title="Eos (Mythologie)">Eos</a>,<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> auch <a href="Phoibe_(Beiname)" class="mw-redirect" title="Phoibe (Beiname)">Phoibe</a> genannt; sie wird später mit der <a href="Mondg%C3%B6ttin" class="mw-redirect" title="Mondgöttin">Mondgöttin</a> <a href="Artemis" title="Artemis">Artemis</a> (bei den Römern <a href="Diana" title="Diana">Diana</a>) oder auch mit <a href="Persephone" title="Persephone">Persephone</a> gleichgesetzt.

<p>Als ihre Eltern werden auch <a href="Helios" title="Helios">Helios</a> oder Pallas<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und Euryphaessa, <i>die weithin Leuchtende</i>, ein anderer Name für Theia, genannt.

</p><p>Selene gebar mit <a href="Zeus" title="Zeus">Zeus</a> die <a href="Pandia_(Mythologie)" title="Pandia (Mythologie)">Pandia</a><sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und <a href="Ersa" title="Ersa">Ersa</a> (<i>Tau</i>); mit <a href="Endymion_(Griechische_Mythologie)" class="mw-redirect" title="Endymion (Griechische Mythologie)">Endymion</a>, dem König von Elis, dem sie ewigen Schlaf schenkte, hat sie 50 Töchter.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die Zahl 50 wird mit den 50 Monaten zwischen zwei Olympischen Spielen in Zusammenhang gesehen. Eine Erzählung berichtet, dass Endymion immerwährend schläft,<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> während Selene zarte Küsse mehr geschätzt haben soll als eine fruchtbare Leidenschaft.

</p><p>Eine andere Erzählung<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> berichtet, dass der im Allgemeinen liebestolle <a href="Pan_(Mythologie)" title="Pan (Mythologie)">Pan</a> sie, in ein schönes weißes Vlies gehüllt, im Wald verführte.

</p><p>Außerdem soll sie den <a href="Nemeischer_L%C3%B6we" title="Nemeischer Löwe">nemeischen Löwen</a> geboren<sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> oder wenigstens großgezogen<sup id="cite_ref-9" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> haben, dem <a href="Herakles" title="Herakles">Herakles</a> in seiner ersten Arbeit das Fell abziehen sollte.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Darstellung">Darstellung</h2></div>

<p>Dargestellt wird Selene mit verschleiertem Hinterhaupt, die Mondsichel über der Stirn und eine Fackel in der Hand, auf Rossen oder Kühen reitend, auch vom Zweigespann gefahren, in Endymionreliefs zu ihrem Liebling herabschwebend, so auch in statuarischen Einzelwerken (<a href="Vatikanstadt" title="Vatikanstadt">Vatikan</a>).

</p><p>Umgeben von anderen Gottheiten, sieht man sie auf einem Altar des <a href="Louvre" title="Louvre">Louvre</a>, wo sie vor sich den untergehenden <a href="Hesperos" title="Hesperos">Hesperos</a> (Abendstern), hinter sich den <a href="Eosphoros" title="Eosphoros">Phosphoros</a> (Morgenstern), unter sich die Maske des <a href="Okeanos" title="Okeanos">Okeanos</a> hat, des Weltenstroms, aus dem sie hervortaucht.
